The challenge of meeting the food and nutrition security needs of 9 to 10 billion by 2050 is even more enormous because it must be accomplished in ways that will:

  • decrease the climate impact
  • improve the resilience of food production to future environmental change
  • protect biodiversity
  • protect our soil and freshwater resource
  • support healthier diets, and
  • reduce the adverse impacts of food production on the whole range of ecosystem services

Research Approach

Combined modelling systems that account for food demand, supply, and an explicit representation of land use are still in their infancy. Thus, the consequences of how various supply- and demand- side measures impact upon, and are influenced by land use change are unknown. 

This project will combine state-of-the art food system and land use models developed within the consortium with spatial datasets.  Bringing together the experienced researchers who have been leading the independent strands of work, will for the first time allow a detailed examination of the feedback loop interactions between land use change and food security dynamics.

Our integrated modeling system will allow us to examine a range of scenarios, including: 

  • production side measures to improve food security (e.g.,sustainable intensification, redistribution and trade)
  • demand side measures (e.g., changing diets, reduced waste)

We will examine the global feedbacks of these scenarios on land use and food supply as well as assess the differential impacts in the project’s 3 study regions (South America, Sub Saharan Africa, and South Asia). 

The project is structured around six interconnected themes, or work packages.
